Hi, I’m Jeff Babener of MLMLegal.com, and I’d like to talk to you today about how to get your product right the first time.
If your business is the machine and your software runs the machine then your product or service is, as the French would say, your reason for existence. In looking back on the history of the direct selling industry, a chicken and egg analysis makes it difficult to determine whether the business opportunity or product was the essential reason for commencement of the business. There are instances of both being true. The founders of Avon, Mary Kay, and Home Interiors came from successful experiences in marketing other products. They found a product suitable for their marketing talents. On the other hand, the founders of Nikken, Amazon Herbs, and Shaklee had a passion for bringing uniquely-new products to the world and direct selling became the best vehicle.

Can you make it just by starting small, or do you have to start big? The fact is that the most successful direct selling companies all started out small. Direct Selling News (DSN) recently posted the 2011 winners of the Bravo Awards. A round of applause goes to Amway, ViSalus and Nu Skin!
Doug DeVos, President of Amway, won the Bravo Leadership Award for putting people first. This includes Amway’s three million independent business owners. Direct Selling News offered the following statement as to why Amway and President DeVos were honored:

An Emerging Giant – What is the Difference Between Direct Selling and Network Marketing?
Network marketing – also called multilevel marketing (MLM), person-to-person marketing, and one-on-one marketing – is a form of direct selling. You may already know about direct selling. Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay, Fuller Brush… these are just some of the direct selling companies that have been household names for decades. Since the 1980’s, new network marketing giants have emerged, including Nikken, Herbalife, NuSkin, Maleleuca, and Prime America.
Direct selling companies market goods and services through networks of thousands of independent distributors. These distributors either buy products from their companies and then resell them to consumers, or they sell products on behalf of their companies for a commission on retail sales.
Network marketing gives direct selling a new spin. In both types of companies, distributors make money by selling products directly to consumers. But in network marketing companies, distributors can also make money by building their own sales organizations and receiving commissions or bonuses on the sales generated by the distributors in the organizations. The term “multilevel marketing” springs from the fact that distributors receive commissions on multiple levels of their organizations. Most direct selling companies today are structured this way.
