As a consultant, where did you first begin selling your products/services?

It is often said that direct selling/MLM/network marketing is about first sharing your product and services within your spheres of influence, that is to say, first harvest the low lying fruit. This means calling upon your friends, family, social acquaintances, co-workers, members of your church, religious group, fraternal organizations, etc. In other words, sell where you are the most comfortable. Generally, this includes territory close to home. Generally speaking if you sell products/services at a distance then it is because you have connections. As you mature, you may venture into other territories, but it likely will be through social networking or by having an online presence.

As a consultant, where did you first begin selling your products/services? How would you rate your success during your first year as a consultant?

Can you start a network marketing company on a low budget?

No one starts at the top and it is the rare company that starts with millions of dollars. It is not unusual to see network marketing startup companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars; this just may not be possible for many with a dream. The fact is that many of today’s successful companies started at kitchen tables, in basements and garages, or even mixing their products in bathtubs. A look at Pampered Chef, Silpada, Longaberger, and even Amway will reveal very humble beginnings. It may take longer and perhaps the chances of success without proper capitalization are much lower, but it can be done. Small startups may emulate from company profiles found at www.mlmlegal.com; they may do their initial books and commissions with Quicken and they may do their printing at local fast print shops. Just hang in there. Financing is “good,” but passion and hard work can also compensate. As Neil Diamond said, “Money talks, but it can’t dance and it can’t walk.”

How much does it cost to start an MLM company? The costs of startup vary widely, depending on the type of product/service being offered and the need for infrastructure. It is obvious that a company which is engaged in its own manufacturing, ownership of warehousing and distribution facilities, etc. will expend much more than a company which is furnished by suppliers of private label products or is involved in a service-type product. With respect to the initial infrastructure costs of a startup MLM, it may be reasonably expected that a company will expend, during the first year, $100,000-$200,000 for four key infrastructure elements:

1)      Legal

2)      Software

3)      Compensation plan design

4)      Creative design for online and offline promotional materials

Humble Beginnings – Don’t Sell Yourself Short

Can you be the “million dollar earner?”  Don’t sell yourself short just because you’re starting small in the direct selling business. History tells us that, in America, many billion dollar businesses have been started on a shoestring in garages and in back bedrooms. Cases in point: Bill Gates of Microsoft, Phil Knight of Nike shoes, and Steve Jobs of Apple Computer. There are also countless inspiring network marketing success stories about individuals whose companies or distributorships had very humble beginnings.

Amway/Quixtar… from the Bathtub!

Take, for example, the co‑founders of Amway, known more recently as Quixtar – network marketing’s largest multi-billion dollar company.  Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel mixed their first product, LOC Cleanser, in their bathtubs to start their business. Starting out as distributors for a vitamin company, Nutrilite, their Amway Corporation later bought Nutrilite, which today is their division for nutritional supplements. Amway has gone on to become the largest seller of dietary supplements in the world with consistent sales in excess of $5 billion.
